A New Home for the Hong Kong Church of God
Global Missions

By Patrick & Jamie Nachtigall

Photo: New church buildingWhen we arrived in Hong Kong in January 2001, we were warmly welcomed into the Hong Kong Church of God (HKCOG). This dynamic congregation numbered about sixty people, with five cell groups and two married couples. Ninety-nine percent of the church was under the age of thirty-five. Pastor Edmund Leung, who was brought to the Lord in this church and put himself through seminary in order to serve the church, had a strong vision for the future of the HKCOG, and now we see that vision continue to be realized.

Today, the Hong Kong Church of God numbers about two hundred, with twenty-four cell groups, at least fifteen married couples, and several young families. The day has been drawing near when the HKCOG would need to find a new home. After operating as a social service center for thirteen years, which allowed the church to be housed in a government housing estate, the HKCOG has moved completely into full-time ministry, training up pastors and doing mission-work. This has necessitated a move.

Celebrate with Us!

The church has purchased a space on the second floor within a larger six-story building (a common practice for churches). The space totals about three thousand square feet. It is on the main street of our neighbourhood, Tai Wai, and just a three-minute walk from the train station, which serves as the central hub of our suburb of 500,000 people. It is a very convenient location with few churches and provides great opportunities for future evangelism.

The process of buying property in Hong Kong has been difficult and at times overwhelming. But the Lord has been with us and has never let us become too discouraged. And we have always felt your prayers and support. We praise him for keeping this church in the palm of his hand and reminding us that he has a tremendous plan for the HKCOG.

While the church has overcome the biggest hurdle of finding the right property, the purchase has pushed the church to its absolute financial limits. In order to secure this purchase, the church was unable to reserve funds for renovation as previously hoped. The brothers and sisters of the HKCOG have been willing to shoulder the burden of a larger mortgage and are initiating a strong fund-raising and tithing effort to accomplish the renovations. We invite you to join in this effort. We most certainly will need help from you in order to complete this project. Below is a list of some of the items we anticipate needing. We encourage you to share this list with your Sunday school classes, WCG groups, and anyone else who you think might feel led to support the HKCOG in the renovation process.
