Providing a forum for laughter and stories, hope and encouragement
By Josh Weiger
Preacher’s kids and missionary’s kids. The mere mention of those words often invokes stereotypes, with stigmas soon to follow. In a world where full-time ministry has proven time and time again to be difficult and draining on the family, the PK/MK Retreat brings together those most affected—the kids!
On Tuesday afternoon, from 3:00 to 7:00, PKs and MKs gathered together for a time of fellowship and fun. Every year, we try to do something different. This year we truly went outside the box and took the group to play broomball. For those of you who have never experienced this exciting and hilarious sport, I’ll try to explain: It’s played on ice and is similar to hockey. Replace the sticks, pucks, and skates with brooms, balls, and tennis shoes and you have it—broomball! As we got the hang of being on the ice, the laughter escalated.
Before going out on the ice, the group came together for a time of reflection. We shared together funny stories of crawling under the church pews and eating leftover Communion bread, among many others. We also were able to talk about the parts of being PKs and MKs that aren’t so funny. We discussed some of the hurt and pain that our families have experienced and looked to Scripture to find hope for those situations. Our time together was purposed toward encouraging, supporting, and connecting these students who experience the church at its best and its worst as the children of men and women in ministry.
